WILT: Cue Validity
From Wikipedia: Cue validity is the conditional probability that an object falls in a particular category given a particular feature or cue.
So, for categorizing a helminth to Nematoda, Trematoda, or Cestoda, body shape would have a high cue validity.
I need to get this reference: Reed, Stephen K. (1972), “Pattern recognition and categorization”, Cognitive Psychology 3 (3): 382–407
WILT: Dictionary of Affect in Language
There’s a dictionary of the emotions in words - “affect”, not “effect” - by Dr. Cynthia Whissell. Seems really interesting; never know, I might need this someday for something.
What I learned today: 5/25/2009
A new word: “sui generis” - “constituting a class alone“- from Paul Krugman’s article in the NY Times on the state of the California economy.
Mayor takes on giant refinery
Mayor Bill White raised the stakes in the fight over Houston’s air Monday, formally challenging the city’s largest refinery to publicly defend its emissions of the carcinogen benzene before receiving another permit from the state.
In an unusual request by the city, White asked the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which is responsible for the state’s air quality, to grant a hearing before a judge on the latest permit application for Lyondell Chemical Co.’s refinery along the Houston Ship Channel.

Environmental effects of Ike on Galveston Bay
A beautiful day in Galveston
Time for the East Coast to keep an eye on the tropics…
The low-pressure system near Puerto Rico hasn’t yet developed a closed circulation, allowing it to become Tropical Storm Kyle. However forecasters still believe that’s likely to occur today or tomorrow.
The system’s definitely worth watching for the U.S. East Coast because several of the dynamic computer models bring it toward an area between North Carolina and Long Island during the next five days. (The nightmare scenario for Kyle would be a strong storm surge pushed into New York and Long Island, which this morning’s GFDL model hints at. New York is ill prepared for such a storm.) …

And from Dr. Jeff Masters:
Residents along the entire U.S. East Coast from Georgia to Maine should anticipate the possibility of a strong tropical tropical storm affecting them late this week. More…

8. Hurricane Ike: Offer: two strong hands
Posted by: “Niklas o’B… (that’s all I intend to giv” ennobee@sockdragger.net ennobee
Date: Sat Sep 20, 2008 3:44 pm ((PDT))After reading all the generous offers for help following the
hurricane, I feel compelled to do my share. However, I can offer
nothing but just pure muscle power. Still, if you got stuff to be
cleaned up, washed out, carried off, stacked, unstacked… and you can
need an extra man, call me back. I’m fairly decent with hammer, nails
and 2-by-4’s and a pretty good computer expert, but I’m not afraid to
get my hands dirty or to do some heavy lifting.Starting Monday, I’ll be back at work in the inner loop area, so I
won’t be available until after 5, may be 6 pm, but I’m jumping to put
that few extra hours to a good use.I’d preferably work close to home or close to work, which would be the
area between Clear Lake and the Medical Center on 288, but I’ll be
willing to go all over the inner loop area or the wider I-45 south
corridor.
